How do I cancel?

The process depends on where you are in your project. Find your situation below.


The most important thing to know: your contract is directly between you and the expert you hired. In almost every case, the right first step is to talk to your expert directly — they're the one who can action a cancellation, agree to a refund, or work out a fair resolution with you. Storetasker Support is here if you need us, but your expert is always your first point of contact.


1. Cancelling a search or brief

When: No expert has been introduced yet

  1. Go to the Storetasker homepage and click View Dashboard (top-right corner, or in the drop-down menu on mobile).
  2. Find the request you submitted.
  3. Under Other Options on the right-hand side, click Cancel Project.

No payment has been collected at this stage, so there's nothing else to resolve.

Tip: You can also edit your brief instead of cancelling — adding more detail can improve your introduction to a new expert.


2. Cancelling before work starts

When: You've accepted a quote, but work hasn't begun yet

When you accept a quote, your payment is held in escrow. You can no longer cancel via the dashboard at this point — you'll need to involve your expert.

  1. Message your expert directly and let them know you'd like to cancel before they begin.
  2. If they confirm no work has started, they can cancel the project from their side.
  3. Once cancelled, your escrowed funds are released.

Tip: Act quickly. The sooner you reach out, the less likely your expert has already started blocking time or preparing for the project.


3. Cancelling mid-project

When: Work is already in progress

Because your expert has already invested time and effort, a full refund is generally not appropriate at this stage. Here's how to handle it:

  1. Contact your expert directly to discuss the situation openly.
  2. Work together to agree on a fair resolution. In most cases this means a partial payment reflecting the work already completed. In some cases your expert may agree to a full cancellation — but that's theirs to decide.
  3. Once you've agreed, your expert updates the billing from their side and funds are released accordingly.

4. Cancelling a retainer

When: You're on an ongoing monthly retainer

Retainers can only be cancelled from the expert's side — you can't cancel a retainer directly from the client dashboard.

  1. Message your expert and let them know you'd like to end the retainer.
  2. Your expert will cancel it from their side. Once cancelled, it won't renew the following month.

Important: Give your expert as much notice as possible. Retainers renew on a fixed date each month — the earlier you reach out, the better the chance of stopping the renewal before the next billing cycle.


Common questions

What happens to my money when I cancel? Funds are held in escrow until the project closes. If no work has started, your expert can cancel and your full payment is released. If work is in progress, you and your expert agree on a fair resolution — typically a partial payment — and billing is adjusted accordingly.

Can I cancel if I already accepted a quote? Yes, but it must be handled with your expert directly — the Cancel button in your dashboard is no longer available after you accept a quote. Message your expert to discuss. If no work has started they can cancel from their end. If work has begun, expect to agree on a partial payment for the time already invested.

Can I get introduced to a new expert for the same project? Yes. Once your current project is cancelled, you can submit a new brief and be introduced to a new expert. If you'd like help getting re-introduced, email support@storetasker.com and we'll assist.

What if my expert isn't responding? If you've messaged your expert and haven't heard back within a reasonable time, reach out to Storetasker Support at support@storetasker.com — we'll step in and help resolve it.

Can I edit my brief instead of cancelling? Yes. From your dashboard you can edit your request and add more detail. This can improve your introduction to a new expert if you haven't been matched yet.
